What is Social Studies?
Social Studies is the study of people, places, and culture. In 6th grade, we study Europe and the Western Hemisphere which includes Canada, the United States, and Latin America. We focus on the physical geography of each area as well as their history and culture. We also explore what life is like today in each of these places in the world.
Our school year is broken up into four 9 week quarters. Students will rotate between all of the 6th grade teachers (Mr. Orr, Mrs. Davis, and Ms. Smith) for Social Studies throughout the year. All students will begin with 9 weeks of instruction over the general (physical, human, and cultural) geography of the world from one of the 6th grade teachers.
After the first quarter, students will rotate between Mrs. Davis, Mr. Orr, and Ms. Smith for the remaining units. Mrs. Davis will be teaching about the United States and Canada, Mr. Orr will be teaching about Europe, and Ms. Smith will be teaching about Latin America.
On this page, you will find more information about the specifics of the curriculum that is taught in 6th grade Social Studies. You will also find Grading Policies and Class Requirements on this page. There are also many links to websites that help support what we are learning in class.
